Dai boasts of his devotion to the club
Dai talks on the phone to someone about the “Lifetime Award”, stressing how he has slaved for twenty years to get the club where it is today.
"Oh, Jim's playing!"
Gaynor arrives, bringing Dai the team sheets;  “Oh, Jim’s playing!   Might as well have the kitchen table on the field – it would move more!” he comments.
Diane envisages that wall being knocked out . . .
Diane tells Gaynor that now Eifion has been caught out, they do not have to pay him compensation, so she can afford some redecorating;  she wants a wall knocked down to make the lounge bigger.
. . . and engages in a little APD publicity
When Gaynor has the same thought, remarking, “At Llwyncelyn, the room’s like a potting shed!” Diane gives her a catalogue, hoping that APD will get the job.
Anita, Darren and Debbie talk about Meic
In the café flat, Anita and Darren talk to Debbie about keeping Meic busy, with Darren suggesting a trip to the Botanic Garden in the New Year, and Anita tells Debbie they were thinking of going out today, and invites her to come.
They have their coats on, ready to go out
However, Meic and Gabriella are preparing to go out;
"I know the very place!"
Gabriella says, “Carpe Diem,” which makes Meic think of fishing, so he knows exactly where they can go, although Gabriella says she prefers birdwatching to fishing.
Anwen is doing a shift in the Deri
Mark delivers post to the Deri, and tells Sheryl he wonders why Darren is staying;  “I’d be on the first flight out,” he says.
"I'll pick you up in two minutes, behind the surgery!"
Then lover boy Hywel arrives, and tells Sheryl he knows the very place they can go, where no-one will know them.   “I’ll pick you up in two minutes, behind the surgery,” he whispers.   “I can’t wait,” she simpers.
Meic returns to a familiar spot . . .
On a bench by Llethr Bach Lake, Meic sits on a bench, with a blanket round his legs, and recalls that he last came fishing here with Denzil shortly before he died.   He caught a pike, but had to throw it back.
. . . on the bank of Llethr Bach Lake
“Denzil was lucky – he didn’t have to worry about things beforehand, but I’m lucky too – I’ve had time to prepare.   It’s strange being here without a fishing rod.”
Anita is annoyed
When Anita gets home to find a note from Gabriella , she is angry;  “Why didn’t she phone?” she demands.
Then Debbie turns up, with all her picnic food
Then Debbie arrives, all prepared for a picnic, with eclairs, victoria sponge, ham sandwiches and sausage rolls.
Anita tells her, “There has been a hitch!” and Darren adds, “A hitch called Gabriella!”
Meic wonders if it is fair on Anita
Meic tells Gabriella that he is very partial to a nice bit of salmon, so she tells him they must have a huge one after the wedding, but he wonders if Anita will be able to cope with marrying him.   “I won’t be making her my wife – I’ll be making her my widow!   Why would I do that?”
"This tea is cold, let's go and find a hot one!"
Then, as their cup of tea is cold, they head for a hotel for a hot one.
Just when they think they cannot be discovered . . .
Meanwhile, Sheryl and Hywel are holding hands, and she asks him what he has told Gaynor.   “Oh, I said I was here,” which causes Sheryl some concern, but he continues, “Repairing a computer – a half-truth is better than a lie.”
. . . Meic and Gabriella walk in!
Just then Meic and Gabriella walk in, talking about pike, and ask at the bar, in English, for two teas.   Sheryl sees them, grabs her coat and manages to exit before they see her.
Hywel is not happy that his excurricular activity has been thwarted
Once Meic notices Hywel, he insists that he stay and join them for tea, although Hywel seems for some reason very eager to leave.
Gabriella runs to the window . . .
Gabriella suddenly remarks, “I’m sure I saw . . .” and runs to the window.
. . . and Hywel thinks all is lost . . .
Hywel fears the worst, until she continues, “A Greater Spotted Woodpecker – what is that in Welsh, Meic?”   He advises that it is a “Cnocell”, and she hurries outside to see it;
. . . but Gabriella is too busy looking for a woodpecker to see Sheryl
Sheryl, waiting by Hywel’s car, crouches down behind it, and is not noticed;  however the bird has flown.
"I'm probably getting in a professional designer"
Gaynor returns the catalogues to Diane and announces that she will probably get the work done by a professional designer.   Diane is affronted, and demands that Dai carry out the work at Bryntirion before Gaynor can get hers done;
"We'll show her that APD can do a better job!"
“We’ll show that snob that APD can do a better job than anyone Gaynor Llywelyn can find!”
Then Mark comes in, wanting bird food, so that he can attract blue tits and sparrows to the garden, as Gabriella is a birdwatcher.
"You look like a pygmy!"
Dai tells him they have much bigger birds in Patagonia, “Condors, eagles and flamingoes!” and adds, “Compared with their rugby team, the Pumas, you look like a pygmy!”
Diane sees romance in the air
Mark insist that there is nothing between him and Gabriella, but Diane has other ideas.
"You weren't wearing your thermal vest!"
When Meic and Gabriella get home, Anita is angry, and complains that Meic was not wearing his thermal vest, “In these sub-zero temperatures!”
She tells him she has arranged for a few people to come round tomorrow, but Gabriella and Meic had planned to go out again.   “Oh, tomorrow’s organised too!” moans Anita.
"Oh, hip, hip, hooray!"
When Meic says that her idea of New Year’s Day lunch in the Deri sounds good, she replies, “Oh, hip, hip, hooray!” and Meic looks very disappointed.
In the Deri, Diane tells Hywel that he will be living in a building site if Gaynor gets her way;
"Oh, did I forget to turn my phone back on?"
when Gaynor comes in, his excuse is that he turned off his phone to mend the computer and forgot to turn it back on.   She tells him about her ideas for redesigning the house.
Gabriella teaches Mark some moves
At Maes-y-Deri, Gabriella is teaching Mark some dance moves, when Debbie arrives and tells her she should move back home.   Debbie asks Mark to lunch on Thursday at the Deri;  “I shall be there with Meic and Anita,” says Gabriella.
In the Deri, Darren complains, “Dad disappears every time Gabriella is around!” and Debbie comments, “It’s a shame she doesn’t do the same.”
Sheryl's broken heel has made her reconsider
Sheryl reports to Hywel that she broke a heel, walking back to the village, and is not sure it is a good idea to carry on like this;  “Meic almost caught us!”
“You’re not getting cold feet, are you?” Hywel answers.

29 December 2014

It is hard work, pretending to be injured
In the shop, Eifion is complaining to Colin, “It’s not easy keeping up this façade, dragging myself around like this,” but he gets little sympathy from Colin;
"You decided to act like Hopalong Cassidy!"
“You decided to act like Hopalong Cassidy!”   Eifion says that he has made a nice profit out of it, and as Colin has spent a fortune on presents, he urges Eifion to press for more compensation, so he can get his cut.
"Robin's coming?   Is he bringing Batman?"
When Dai and Diane come in, Eifion hides out the back, as Dai announces that Robin McBryde will be coming to the celebration on Wednesday.
Colin over-emphasises to Dai that Eifion has had the worst Christmas ever, is in terrible pain and cannot do anything for himself.
"He's had too much compensation already!"
Dai’s reaction is that it is all a scam and he has had too much compensation already;  Diane does admit that he was “slightly injured.”   Dai adds, “But not as injured as he’d be if I could prove it’s a fake!”
"The weak link is the woman and her sentiment"
When they have gone, Eifion thinks he has no chance of further money, but Colin says, “I heard Diane worrying about you – now is the time to act and squeeze the last bit of compo out of them.   The weak link is the woman and her sentiment!”
"No, don't tell the children about Meic"
In the café, Katie tells Darren she has booked a taxi for 1:30pm to take them to the airport.   Darren wants to tell the children about Meic, but Katie dissuades him.
Harri Wyn talks to Meic and Anita
Meic has a visit from Harri Wyn, the Palliative Care Nurse, who tells him it is important to have family and friends around him.   He asks if Meic wants to go into a hospice, or stay at home, and Meic is insistent upon the latter;
“I’d like to be here when it all ends,” he answers.
"My symptoms are getting worse!"
Eifion hobbles round to Bryntirion again, and draws Dai’s attention to the list of symptoms he supplied in the Christmas card, maintaining that they are getting worse.   He receives short shrift from Dai;
"How many hundred thousand do you have in the bank?"
“We had so many Christmas cards with letters asking for compensation that it takes a while to get through them!   Just remind us, how many hundred thousand do you have in the bank?   Diane and I have lived like poor church mice this Christmas!”
When Diane expressed some sympathy for Eifion, but says they cannot afford to pay any more,
"I've got no sympathy whatsoever!"
Dai interrupts, “I’ve got no sympathy whatsoever!   A bit of physio and you’ll be jumping around like a ferret!”   When Eifion hobbles away, Dai accuses Diane of, “Being like a jelly baby with him!”
Harri raises the things which will need to be done
Harri discusses the need for a bed downstairs, so that Meic will be in the centre of things, and everything will be at hand.
"Is home the right place?" asks Darren
Darren, who has joined them, wonders if home is the right place, but Harri emphasises that the hospice will be available if Meic needs it.   Meic admits it is difficult to find the right time and right place to tell friends and neighbours.
Darren announces he will stay with his father
Darren says that he will stay on in the village, while Katie and the children go back to Saskatchewan, and Harri considers he will be a help to his father.
Diane goes to visit Angela, afraid that war will break out between Eifion and Dai;
Angela reads a very familiar list of symptoms
when Angela sees the list of symptoms enclosed with the Christmas card – “Depression, unable to get out, needs help with meals, and to cope with bills” – she assures Diane, “Leave this with me.”
Katie does not want to go back to Canada without him
Darren returns to Katie in the café and tells her that he will not be accompanying her home, as Meic is not going to a hospice, and he suspects that the end is nearer than he thought.   “He is worse than he is willing to admit – I have to stay.   You’ll have to cope without me,” but Katie is not happy about this.
"Hope their playing is better than their writing," comments Eifion
In the Deri, Colin shows Eifion a rugby ball, signed by the Scarlets Squad, which will be raffled on Wednesday night.
"Your hands are still working, then!"
Angela arrives, and pointedly comments, “Your hands are still working, then!   You can still open envelopes and write letters!”
Dai and Diane then come in;  “Good grief, not you again!” remarks Dai.   Eifion starts hobbling to the door, saying, “I’m going – I don’t want to waste time looking at you!”
Angela tells him she wants to talk to him;  “Come home then,” he replies.
"Isn't this yours?"
Determined, she picks up the rugby ball, shouts, “Isn’t this yours?” and throws it at him.
What a catch! . . .
Eifion drops his crutches to catch it, then realises what he has done;
"I knew it!" shouts Dai
as Dai shouts triumphantly, “Heavens!   I knew it!”   Eifion tries to convince them all, “My back’s better – something clicked!”
Dai’s response is, “Your neck’s going to click when I get my hands round it!”   Colin comments, “It went crunch – what a miracle,” and Angela adds, “Isn’t it just?”
"I want every penny of that compensation back!"
Eifion insists that his back was injured, but Dai shouts, “Poppycock!   I want every penny of that compensation back!”
Angela points out the flaw in his "cunning plan"
Taking Eifion to one side, Angela points out that his list of symptoms was copied word for word from her client’s application form.   “I could lose my job over this,” she warns him.
When she volunteers Eifion to play in the veteran’s rugby team, Dai is adamant;  “He’s not contaminating a Cwmderi shirt!”
Meic bids the children a tearful goodbye
Meic hugs Alys, Wil and Katie, and they leave to pick up their bags from Sheryl’s.   Darren assures Anita that Katie understands he has to stay.
"I don't want to be suffering"
Meic confides to Darren that he does not want to be suffering when the end comes;  “I wants it to be quick when it comes – I want it under control, under my control.”
"I'll do anything – you know that"
Darren confirms that he will do anything to help his father.
